Music Ministry

  FCBC Choir

This choir is open to any and all who want to serve God through choral singing. Our aim is to enhance the spiritual experience
of the 10am worship service with our God given voices as best we can. Only a few singers have soloist ability, but together we
create music that profoundly expresses our deepest joys, sorrow, and spirit, and love for God and all that He has done for us.

Our material ranges from contemporary to classics, including gospel (whatever works). Normal rehearsal time is on Sunday
mornings from 8:30am to 9:55am. A few Thursday nights are interspersed whenever necessary. Come, join us. It's a
commitment, but an enjoyable way to be of service.

  Handbells

Roger Tom heard beautiful music from these unique instruments and started a plan to purchase them. The handbells were funded primarily with Howard Quan Memory Fund and were purchased in 1984. Melanie Low started a children and adult choir. Pungo was the oldest member and Christy Jin was the youngest member. There was a big gap in ringing abilities, so the choir was divided up. Shirlene Tong led the adults and Melanie led the youth. Later on Marjorie Moy directed the Adult Choir. Milton Dong started a choir for the 11:10 service and Wai Ling was a member. Jennifer Chang and Serena Jang trained for a year, led a senior and junior high choir and gave Melanie a year off. The Youth Handbell Choir had attended a competition at Cathedral Hill Hotel. We played “Do You Hear What I Hear”. We also attended a Third Annual Spring Ring festival in Oakland where we learned new techniques, played “Rondo” for the festival, and rang 4 songs with other Bay Area choirs. We were directed by James Meredith (composer, pianist, and director of SONOS Handbell Choir) and were accompanied by an organist and a drummer. We’ve also gone to AGEHR festivals in Sacramento for training.

Lawrence Pang directs the Youth Handbell Choir. Wai Ling Wong directs the junior high choir. If you have a desire to try ringing, please don’t hesitate to talk to Melanie. We want YOU to share in our joy of ringing. It’s a lot of fun because we create beautiful music together and thank God for His wonderful grace at the same time.

  Men's Chorus

The Men's Chorus (Men of the FCBC Choir) have been singing for the past 3 years. They usually sing on the second Sunday of the month, and occasionally for special church events. Victor Low leads the choir, and encourages others to join this vibrant group.

  Cantonese Choir
This choir is open to any and all who attends the 11:15am Cantonese service. We sing once a month, and rehearse on Sundays from 2:15pm to 3:30pm. Our mission is to help the congregation prepare for worship and also to express ourselves through music. Ninety percent of the anthems are sung in Cantonese. Come and join us. It's a commitment and enjoyable way to be serving God.

  Gospel Choir

2005 ABC Biennial Convention

The Say Amen! Gospel Ensemble (or simply “The Gospel Choir”) is in its sixth season praising God through lively, spirited, toe-tapping and finger-snapping music. The intergenerational choir specializes in a cappella and accompanied choral works that span American spirituals to contemporary jazz and Gospel. Sometimes the group is accompanied by drums and bass guitar.

The choir rehearses weekly on Sunday afternoons from 1:30-2:30 pm and sings for the joint English worship the last Sunday of every month and, occasionally, special church and community events. In 2002 the choir presented “Spiritual Shoo Be Doo,” a concert featuring both spirituals and a tribute to the music of the 1950s and 1960s. “Celebrating the American Spiritual,” a CD of the first two seasons of music, was produced that year. In 2005 the choir was selected to perform at the ABC Biennial Convention in Denver, CO. In 2006, the choir presented a "supper club type" concert of 1920s and 1930s hit songs in memory of our choir member Don Jin. In 2007, the choir presented a Christmas concert that showcased many of our members as soloists, singing familiar Christmas carols.

We welcome singers of high school age and up who are willing to commit to one hour a week to learn and enjoy this genre of music. We sing in four or more parts and encourage our members to memorize the music, and sometimes improvise and experiment different ways to bring the music of our souls to the hearts of the listener. As we like to say, “Who says Asians don’t have rhythm?”
