First Chinese
Baptist Church - San Francisco
SUMMER BASKETBALL MINISTRY 2004
BACKGROUND
The
First Chinese Baptist Church (FCBC) of San Francisco is involved in the Chinese
Christian Union (CCU) Basketball League as an affirmation of our Christian
faith through fellowship with other Christians. We believe interaction with
other churches and other Christians helps to build our personal relationship
with Christ. Through the years our involvement with the CCU Basketball
League has also been an important outreach as FCBCers invite their friends
to come to church and to play on our FCBC teams.

PLEDGE OF BEHAVIOR
Participating
in the Chinese Christian Union Basketball League is an exciting, fun, and
competitive time for everyone. Many friendships have started through this
gathering and many more will develop. We have seen how our participation in
this league serves as an important time of outreach and fellowship. However,
we have also seen how the game of basketball brings out the worst in a person
in the heat of competition. As Christians, we need to stop and question our
behavior on the basketball court. Are we being examples of Christ? Are we
being good representatives of the church?
For these reasons,
we have established the following as a Pledge of Behavior:
To the best of
my ability during this basketball season, I, _______________________________,
commit and pledge the following:
1. To control my temper and my language on and off
the basketball court during the heat of competition
“Get rid of all
bitterness; rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of
malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just
as in Christ God forgave you. Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved
children, and live a life of love."
(1Ephesians 4:31-5:2 NIV)
2. To be regularly involved in the weekly programs
of FCBC or another church.
3. To work as part of a team, under the direction
of the Coach, by attending practices, following instructions, and participating
in team fellowship.
"Let
the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you
were called to peace. And be thankful." (Colossians 3:15 NIV)
I understand
that I am a representative of First Chinese Baptist Church and as an example
of Christ, I will do my best to bring honor to the Lord. I also understand
the penalties of reduced playing time and possible dismissal which will be
determined by the Coach and the Sports Ministry Committee.
